After several weddings quite some distance away from home, including overseas, it was a pleasure to be asked to cover Melanie & Saul’s wedding in Chester earlier this year, even more so as I was given details about how they had planned the day and the style of photography they would like, being more of the reportage type and nothing at all formal which I find can be quite dull and clichéd at times.
Was assisted for the majority of the day by Clive Davies which was a huge help and allowed things that might otherwise have been missed to be captured.
The day started with me shooting Melanie getting ready at her suite at Crabwall Manor in Mollington whilst Clive shadowed Saul and the wedding party as they arrived at St Werburgh’s Church in the city centre.
After the ceremony in the deceptively large church, we then had a mad dash back to the car to make our way over to the Oaks at Mollington golf course for the reception.
The informal nature of the day continued long into the evening which made covering it most enjoyable, particularly the ‘crazy hour’ near the end where literally everybody put on colourful wigs and oversized glasses and had a right good dance to the brilliant latin band.
One of the things I had mentioned to Melanie & Saul in advance of the wedding was that I might be able to set up a photo booth, Melanie supplying all manner of fancy dress costumes and myself then capturing the guests looking the most ridiculous they probably ever will. The setup was pulled together last minute but went down a storm, it looked like it might have been a flop to begin with but just took one brave soul to come up and have a go before everyone then wanted in on the action, turned out to be a massive success, and very funny indeed! Definitely something will be offering again in the future, watch this space!
